Moving on...

The outdoors has all you need to survive - food, water, fresh air, and materials for making everything from clothes, to buildings, to books. But the outdoors is in danger! Here are some simple ways to let your kiddos know how they can help!

1. Use Less Energy!

Much of the energy used to run cars, heat homes, and power gadgets and machines comes from energy sources such as coal and oil. They cause pollution and they are fast running out. Try to take fewer car journeys by going on walks, using your bicycles, and taking a bus! When it is cold outside you can put on a sweater or two and turn down the heater!

2. Reduce Waste!

Lots of energy is wasted making things that are needlessly thrown away. Did you know that plastic waste is a really big problem? It takes hundreds of years to break down, lots of plastic ends up in the sea, and kills animals of all kinds! Did you also know that almost 1/3 of all food produced goes to waste? So eat up and don't buy more than you can eat! Do not leave water running while you brush your teeth, and buy things that do not use too much packaging so that there is less garbage to throw away.

3. Reuse!

Use boxes more than once, or turn them into things that you can play with! You can cut out shapes and draw on details to turn a box into a castle! Give away old toys and clothes to someone else who could use them! Use old cans as a plant pot, or to store away pencils! If you have to buy a plastic bottle, use it again and again and again and again! Collect vegetable peels and store them in the freezer until you have enough to boil into a vegetable broth for soup! Don't forget to recycle it! If you can't reuse something, recycle it so it can be used to make something new. Glass, paper, cans, and many plastics can be recycled!

4. SPREAD THE WORD!

Share your love of the great outdoors and tell others how they can help look after it. Can you think of other ways to help the great outdoors? Perhaps you could plant a tree? Leave a comment so that we can all share ideas on how to teach our little ones how to reduce, reuse, and recycle!!
